Wood is a beautiful yet challenging material to work with, especially when used underwater. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity can cause wood to swell and contract. However, with over 40 years of experience in building spearguns from various types of wood, we have perfected the manufacturing process. When you purchase a RIFFE speargun, you can trust that it is built to withstand years of spearfishing adventures. We love hearing from those who bought spearguns from Jay decades ago when he was crafting them in his garage. Many of those spearguns are still in use today. At ten years old, JAY RIFFE started spearfishing off the Southern California Coast with a hand spear. By fifteen, he was competing in spearfishing events, and by twenty-two, he became the Pacific Coast Champion. Jay later placed in the Nationals, earning a spot on the World Spearfishing Team and setting three World Records—all with his handcrafted wooden spearguns.
Early on, Jay recognized the need for spearguns that were silent, powerful, accurate, and highly maneuverable. Combining his professional machine tool engineering skills with his passion for spearfishing, he created ergonomically designed, handcrafted teak wood and metal spearguns of unmatched quality and performance.
Today, RIFFE INTERNATIONAL, INC. remains family-owned and operated. The company has earned a reputation for building durable, accurate wood spearguns for the Silent Hunter. RIFFE now offers not only the most reliable spearguns but also a variety of diving accessories suitable for novice and experienced freedivers, spearfishermen, and divers alike. Our goal is to continue producing high-quality products for diving and spearfishing enthusiasts.
